“Thanks for dinner,” Taylor said as she and Quinn walked hand in hand from the subway station toward the hotel. “I thought for sure you’d insist on eating in our room again.”

“I didn’t want to go straight back to our hotel from the gallery anyway,” Quinn admitted.

“Well, the food was great, so thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” Quinn smiled over at her. He glanced behind them, and instantly his demeanor changed. His pace was still steady, but his eyes darkened and seemed to have a new awareness. He tightened his grip on her hand as they approached their hotel. He lowered his voice and said, “Keep walking.”

“Okay.” Taylor’s shoulders tightened.

Instead of going inside, he continued past their hotel and then walked toward the shopping plaza next door.

Then in a normal voice he said, “You should be able to find a new sweatshirt in here. I still can’t believe you forgot to pack one.”

Taylor looked up at him, confused for a moment. Then she realized she needed to play along, even though she desperately wanted to turn around and see if someone was following them. “I thought I brought one.”

Quinn gave her hand an encouraging squeeze and led her inside the plaza. Then he quickly turned into the first store they reached, a women’s clothing store.

Before Taylor could say anything, Quinn pulled her to the side of the door where they weren’t visible from anyone entering the plaza but where Quinn could see everyone passing by.

“What’s going on?” Taylor whispered.

“There was a guy walking behind us that I noticed on the subway. I just want to make sure he isn’t following us.”

“Now what?” Taylor asked.

“We wait a few minutes.” Still keeping his eyes on the door, Quinn reached down and took one of the sweatshirts off of the rack. Then he pointed to the dressing room a short distance away. “Why don’t you go try this one on?”

Taylor lowered her voice to a whisper and leaned closer to him. “Because it isn’t my size.”

“Then pick one that is,” Quinn whispered back. “And go into the dressing room over there.”

“This one’s cute,” Taylor said, plucking one at random that was her size.

“Go ahead and try it on,” Quinn suggested mildly, his eyes still trained on the door. “I’ll wait here.”

“Okay.” Taylor weaved her way to the back wall where the dressing rooms were located. She ducked inside one, latched the door, and leaned back against it. Surely Quinn was just overreacting. Or was he?

Nerves danced in her stomach as she glanced down at her watch and wondered how long she should wait before walking back out to find him. What would she do if there really was someone following her? Was Quinn still in the store, or had he gone out searching for the man he was concerned about? After several endless minutes, Taylor finally cracked the door open and poked her head out to see Quinn still standing guard. He glanced over at her and gave her a subtle nod to join him. Leaving the sweatshirt in the dressing room, she walked over to him, her eyes questioning.
